It is time to Unite 4 Energy For All

It is time to end fuel poverty. Some 12 million homes across the UK cannot afford to pay their energy bills. And bills keep going up. On top of this the energy price cap is due to rise by £221 a year for the average household. Excess profits by the energy companies also continue to rise.

The cost of energy has created a poverty and health crisis. Now it's surging again because of another illegal war. If everyone had a fair share of renewable energy, everyone could afford heating, lighting, washing, and cooking. But profits, unfair regulations and waste mean people can't benefit from the energy that is cheap to produce.

Unite Community - working with Fuel Poverty Action - is demanding an end to fuel poverty. The campaign demands are simple:

  • Public ownership of the energy sector
  • A worker-led transition to renewable energy
  • Excess green energy should be free

Campaign background

Unite Community members will be joining other campaign groups to draw attention to the shameful fact that 12.1 million UK households live in fuel poverty and cannot afford to pay their energy bills. This latest rise in the price cap puts gas and electricity bills 79 per cent higher than they were before the energy crisis began in winter 2020/21.

Meanwhile, as ordinary people struggle to make ends meet, greedy energy companies make massive profits.  Energy giants have made around £125 billion in profits on their UK operations since the cost-of-greed crisis started in winter 2020/21. Since the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran over £3 billion in profits have been made on UK operations.

It's time to stop the rip off!

The UK energy price cap will increase by 13% for a typical dual-fuel household from 1 July to 30 September, raising the average annual bill to £1,862 for people paying by direct debit. This will add roughly £18 a month to energy bills across Great Britain.

  • If you prepay for your energy, prices will rise by 13.5% to £1,812 a year
  • If you pay on receipt of a bill, it'll be a 13.1% rise to £2,005 a year.

The energy price cap for Great Britain is reviewed every three months by Ofgem. In Northern Ireland, the Utility Regulator sets the equivalent of the price cap. Unite research shows that UK energy companies make £30 billion a year in profits. That means the average household pays £500 a year in energy profits. This is at a time when household energy bills have increased by 42 per cent since Winter 2021.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "The increase in the energy cap is a kick in the teeth for workers and families who were already struggling with rising costs and the cost-of-living crisis. The UK has among the highest energy bills in Europe.

"We need decisive action for the short and long term.

"An immediate and deep cut in the energy price cap, a competent plan that deals with the extortionate industrial energy costs and a plan to renationalise our energy. Unite is calling for the renationalisation of the UK’s energy system beginning initially with the grid.”
