Unite secures Stand Scotland and Newcastle comedy club workers 19% pay rises
- Monday 26 February 2024
Unite, the UK’s leading union, has secured bumper pay rises for over 100 Stand Comedy club workers in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle.
The one year pay deal, negotiated without the need for industrial action, will see the lowest paid receive pay rises of 13.6 per cent. Some workers will receive pay increases of 19.3 per cent due to their pay bands being regraded.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This pay deal was achieved because the workers at Stand understood the benefits of joining Unite and getting organised. Unite is the union for hospitality workers and we are completely committed to winning better jobs, pay and conditions for our members.”
In 2019, Unite signed an industry leading voluntary recognition agreement with Stand Comedy. Under the agreement, all workers regardless of their age are paid at least the living wage as set by the Living Wage Foundation.
Additionally, the agreement ensures workers receive paid rest breaks, minimum hours contracts (no zero hours contracts), full payment for trial shifts, paid transport home after 12am, consultation on rota changes and they receive 100 per cent of tips.
Unite lead organiser for hospitality Bryan Simpson said: “Stand Comedy club workers have some of the best wages and terms and conditions in the sector. This in turn benefits Stand, boosting its reputation and ensuring it does not suffer the same high staff turnover rates that afflict many other venues.
“Unite will continue to organise tirelessly across the hospitality industry and we urge those wanting to drive up wages and working conditions to join us.”
