Workers at the Lindsey oil refinery and members of Unite will stage a demonstration tomorrow (Thursday 24 July) in protest at the plans to wind down production at the site, ahead of a planned closure this autumn

When: Thursday 24 July 12:30 – 14:30
Where: Grimsby Town Hall, Town Hall Square, Grimsby DN31 1HX
(Members of Unite will be available for interview and photos will be distributed on request)

The workers are demanding that the government takes immediate action to secure the long-term future of the Lindsey oil refinery.

The protest follows the announcement by the special managers who have been operating the refinery since it went into administration late last month, that they have been unable to find a buyer and are set to begin the process of winding down the site, with any closure likely later in the year.

Unite believes that the decision to wind down the site is premature, crude oil should continue to be purchased and additional time should be given to finding a viable long-term future for the refinery.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Over a thousand workers rely on the future of the oil refinery, their jobs are now at immediate risk, through no fault of their own. If the government fails to act then workers at Lindsey and much further afield will rightly, feel abandoned by it.”
