Shetland based Sodexo workers in dispute over unacceptable pay offer

Sullom Voe terminal workers step up industrial action today (Wednesday 28 January) in an escalating pay dispute with Sodexo.

Around 30 Unite members at Sodexo resume 24-hour strike action in a long-running pay dispute after workers overwhelmingly rejected an unacceptable two-year pay offer.

Unite can further confirm an escalation in industrial action with 24-hour stoppages set to take place on 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25 and 27 February.

The workers perform various roles including mechanics, cleaners, plant operators, and electricians. Unite’s Sodexo members unanimously backed strike action. In 2024, Sodexo posted profits after tax amounting to £593,000.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Sodexo know what it needs to do to end this dispute, but it continues to make unacceptable offers to its dedicated and skilled workers. Unite will not tolerate our members being treated with such disdain and we will back them all the way in the fight at Sodexo for better jobs, pay and conditions.”

Another dispute involving 60 Altrad contractors at Sullom Voe was resolved after workers accepted an improved pay offer over two years. The workers include painters, insulators, and other staff.

Unite industrial officer Vic Fraser, said: “The escalation in industrial disruption at Sullom Voe is down to the contemptible behaviour of Sodexo. Unite will not accept low ball offers.  Last week, we successfully resolved a long-running pay dispute with Altrad at Sullom Voe after strike action by our members. Sodexo’s  actions is causing widespread disruption at the terminal.”
