Stormont Executive has no excuse for failing to deliver on basic rights for workers
- Tuesday 9 June 2026
Political parties are warned that if they fail to deliver for workers they will not be forgiven
Responding to recent developments in Stormont around the Good Jobs Bill, Unite the union has demanded that the promises for workers’ rights be delivered in the current assembly term.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Most of the rights in the Good Jobs Bill are already in force in the rest of the UK. There is no excuse why these provisions should be further delayed in Northern Ireland.
“We must deliver on the promise to protect workers in precarious contracts, improve work/life balance and strengthen the ability of workers to access the benefits of union membership.”
Regional secretary for Ireland, Susan Fitzgerald said, “Access to a union will be transformative for the most vulnerable workers and those in exploitative employment contracts. The provisions being discussed for this bill will strengthen the hands of workers and their unions.
“Anyone who takes the side of the business lobby to frustrate progress needs to understand that workers will not forgive them – we will fight to ensure every possible improvement for workers is delivered.”
