Unite secures recognition for Northampton DHL drivers
- Wednesday 10 May 2023
Unite, the UK’s leading union, has signed a recognition deal for HGV drivers employed at DHL’s Crick DIDC2 site in Celtic Way, Kilsby, Northampton.
Drink can delivery
The 45 plus drivers are employed to deliver cans produced by Ardagh to all the major and craft brewers in the UK, as well as a large number of well-known soft drink producers, including Coca Cola.
The drivers approached Unite in January this year regarding a number of workplace issues and membership quickly grew, this allowed Unite to seek a voluntary recognition agreement. Following negotiations with the company a recognition agreement was signed between DHL and Unite last week.
Significant deal
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This is a significant deal for our members on the DHL contract who will now have Unite watching their backs and fighting their corner.
“Recognition deals like this are highly significant as they underline that Unite’s focus on the jobs, pay and conditions of workers is resonating throughout the economy.”
Unite will now begin the process of electing driver representatives at the company.
One Unite voice
Unite regional officer Sean Kettle said: “The drivers have shown great patience during this process. They have stuck to their trade union principles and will move forward knowing they can speak with one Unite voice, in order to build on and enhance their terms and conditions.”
