Unite members vote to accept five per cent pay deal
Unite members working for Biffa refuse services in the Wirral are celebrating an above-inflation pay deal they secured.
Over 200 workers will receive a 5.1 per cent pay increase for 2024/25. The pay agreement covers the operational workers collecting refuse and street cleansing on behalf of Wirral borough council. The deal is for 12 months until 31 March 2025.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "This is another great example of the power of the union movement and demonstrates that Unite is the winning union for all local authority workers, regardless of their employer.

“Our members at Biffa on the Wirral should be proud of how they negotiated and won an above inflation pay deal through their solidarity. This deal demonstrates how Unite’s relentless focus on members’ jobs, pay and conditions is delivering genuine wage increases for members.”
Workers will also receive pay for driver training and an increase in the core workforce to help with additional workloads.
Unite is currently in dispute (and currently balloting for industrial action) with the national local government employers pay offer and victories like this show that where workers are strong in a union, improved pay and conditions are more than possible.
Unite regional officer Mark Williams added: "The stewards at Biffa do a fantastic job and you can see that in the result which was to unanimously accept this deal. Our members and reps should hold their heads up high for obtaining this pay increase. Solidarity personified."
